How will Roland respond to the public chastisement from The Fly Jock

The Fly Jock is one of the most powerful men in Black Media and he's showing it

The drama for outspoken correspondent Roland Martin continues. Now the “Fly Jock”, Tom Joyner, has issued a written “smack down” chastising him for prolonging the issue with GLAAD.

In his statement, Joyner says  “When people are offended by something we say or do, it doesn’t matter what our intentions are. The job of the offender is simply to apologize and learn a lesson about what to say or do going forward.”

He continues with “Your mission is greater than your principal.  It’s no longer about you. Now it’s grown into something bigger than you are, but only you can make right.”

2 things are going on here. He is flexing his muscle in the African-American community and he is probably responding to pressure from GLAAD as well. Interesting enough though, is there isn’t any written threat of his job being in jeopardy with the TJMS. Tom focuses on Roland’s job with CNN, not his daily correspondent segment with the TJMS. At least not yet.

Well Roland, “Check”. The next move is on you.

Oh yeah…by the way, he managed to give a backhand slap to Tavis Smiley as well. I guess he just couldn’t resist himself. Check out the full open letter here.

CNN, Tom Joyner and TV One Contributor Has Learned The Hard Way about the LGBT Community's Sense Of Humor

Anyone who follows Roland Martin on Twitter know that he can get under your skin. Especially if you are a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, anyone Republican or if you are a member of any black fraternity besides Alpha Phi Alpha. He also  is an annoying advocate of any team from Houston and Texas A & M. He is a master at what is called in black culture of “playing the dozens” or “jonein.”

Through social media, Roland has mastered the art of self promotion, which has helped him fill the void of the one black guy that CNN calls on for all things political. He definitely understands the art of blending news and entertainment. Make no mistake, he’s a great political analyst.

Well during one of his many tweets during the Super Bowl, he made a critical mistake that many of us born before 1980 (he was born in 1968) make. He forgot that disrespecting the LGBT community in this day and age is the quickest path to contrition, sanctions and unemployment. Whether real or imagined, the homosexual community is not going to tolerate it.

I have talked about this many times on Life Full Circle Radio. There are a ton of us 35+ that need to be “reprogrammed.” As a child growing up in the 80s, it was common for young boys to call each other “gay”, “faggot”, “homo”, etc as a means of insulting our friends and enemies. Of course it was “cool.” Our uncles, dads, grandpas and, dare I say, mommas used those terms all the time to either demean us or motivate us to act. One of the most motivating insults to get a kid to fight a kid picking on them, was to call them a gay slur if they didn’t stand up for themselves.

Well fast forward 3o years and what do you have? A 40+ year old journalist, who ran his tweet through the 12-year-old Roland filter, instead of his current mind that should have taken into account what was at stake. His career.

Many of us have to be reprogrammed. We have to balance whatever we feel about the homosexual community, with what is culturally accepted today. Ultimately, we have to live and let live.

Make no mistake, Roland can try to spin that tweet anyway he wants. That was absolutely an insinuation that if anyone was at your Super Bowl party and thought that David Beckham’s ad, slightly made you want to buy a pair of his underwear, you needed to, figuratively, get smacked up. Why? Because you were showing attraction to a man in his drawers, and would be considered as acting “gay.”

Do I believe that his statement was to be taken literally? Of course not. Roland was simply running his mouth, or better yet his fingers…on Twitter. That is simply what he does. Once again, if you follow Roland on Twitter, you see him jousting with people all day long.

Unfortunately, he lost sight of the fact he was not in his high school gym, he is on the world’s stage for all to see. I doubt he will make that mistake again. The stakes are too high.

This week on Life Full Circle Radio we are going to talk about Black women, fitness and hair.

Going back to the days of middle and high school, one of the common occurrences was to see the boys playing basketball, kickball and  dodgeball during gym while, the girls sat on the side with their noses turned up looking at the boys and all their developing testosterone getting funky right before science class. Well just a couple of years earlier when those same girls were in pigtails and the class was called “recess” and not gym, they were out there right with the boys playing tag, hoop and soccer. Something happened right around the time that puberty set in for the girls. They started to listen to their moms, sisters and aunties when they told them how much their roots were tightening up because of sweat and activity. In there lies the beginning of the black woman’s dilemma. Whats more important, my perm or my “firm?”

Just added to the show is Fitness Expert, Melinda Henry

If you look around, you see black women daily with everything from short dos to long dos, weaves to grown out, dreaded to fros, rocking what they feel is there best self-expression. Than when you pan down to the rest of them the story often takes a “wider” lens. Uh oh… “Oh No he didn’t!” Yes I did.

Now before you get your unmentionables in a bunch, this (and most of my blogs and radio shows for that matter) are about self-evaluation. I am a long way from my basketball playing weight and have to sometimes drag myself to the gym to workout. With that being said, ladies its time to take a good long look in the mirror. Do you really believe that you can eat what you want, live a sedentary lifestyle that goes from the bed, to a car that drives you to work, to a desk that you sit at all day, and back home, yet keep up that body that got you all that attention in high school and college? Really? Evidently you do, and the cure-all is a new weave or perm to work out the kinks. This just in, when I do make it to the gym, there are a lot more white women running that track or on those ellipticals than sisters (now you can officially take off your earrings and hit the roof!)

Dr. JeffriAnne Wilder will give us an sociological position on this issue

Maybe its time to take a bit more inspiration from our first lady than her fashion sense. Even with all her money and access to the best hairdressers that money can buy, her arms look much better then her do.

Now that, you are mad at me (when you should be made with Ronald McDonald, Wendy and The Burger King), I encourage you to comment below and join us this week, on Life Full Circle Radio as we will dig into this subject. I promise you, we will all be better for it.

Editors note: This is a follow to the story that was posted last week about the surgeons generals study on black women sacrificing health over hair .

This week on Life Full Circle Radio we are going to dig into the topic of interracial dating.  Now for all the hyper sensitive folks who got upset strictly off of the name of this blog, wait until the show.

We will have Christelyn Karazin, creator of the website Beyond Black White. Christelyn is a sister from Cali that happened to find her love in a white dude. With that, of course she has gone through scrutiny from her peers. But it doesn’t seem to matter much and to a growing number of black women. You should visit her site and read some the comments  that these women have to say about the brothers.

We will also have Champ from VerySmartBorthas.com. If you have read their blog, you know that they have a very funny and insightful position on an array of topics including this one.

if you are down with the “swirl” or not, you don’t want to miss this show! It will be one for records books!

Big Macs or Sirloins (Spike Lee Vs. Tyler Perry) Do We have to Choose?

This week, I was visiting family in Phoenix, when what started as all pleasure trip turned into a bit of a business. My little brother, who is a student at Arizona State University, informed me that Spike Lee would be there while I was in town. He asked me would I like to attend. Of course my response was an emphatic “yes.” Man, that’s Spike Lee! Of course I want to hear what brother Spike has to say. Than my mind started to work. There are many people who don’t know how influential and impactful that brother was through the late 80s and early 90s with his Spike Lee Joints.

Spike Lee seems to have become a bit of a caricature of his former self. Much more Mars Blackmon then himself. That little guy at all the Knicks games screaming at everybody from Reggie Miller to Lebron James, all while his beloved squads have sucked! The little dude with the funny rimmed glasses, the funny walk, clap and loud mouth. The dude according to writers like Terrell Jermain Pryor are certified “haters” for being openly critical of the “quality” of work that the black community is receiving in cinema.

Spike Lee has been put in that “crotchety old man” group with the likes of Bill Cosby, Danny Glover and Dick Gregory. These media figures that came through the game when you had to really have a compelling storyline in your works to gain the appeal of the audience. An era when Black artists truly wanted to make a difference and educate their audiences, because they knew how much that lacked in schools and in their homes daily.

When Spike made movies like “Do The Right Thing”,  “Jungle Fever”, “Mo Better Blues” and “X”, he always had the goal to teach while he entertained. During his appearance at ASU, he spoke of his love of history, which has always been a focus in his work. He has been one of the few mainstream black filmmakers that was had that desire and success at doing just that.

On the flip side, brother Tyler Perry’s direction has always been that of telling the same story with different characters. It’s like how, McDonalds takes the same hamburger patties and puts different sauces and vegetables ( I use that word loosely) on them to make them more appealing. When you take that bite ultimately, it’s still the same meat, that many of us consume incessantly to our detriment.

Now before you put me in that Tyler Perry “hater” group, chill out. Admittedly, I think I have seen all of TPs movies and support them regularly, just like once every six months I crave a Big Mac. I enjoy it, but I know, if I eat too many of them to often, my waistline and my wife won’t be happy with me.

To me, Tyler Perry is like fast food and cookies. They need to be enjoyed in moderation. For example, For Better or Worse was too much for me. Way to much drama, too little substance, especially when a quality show like Reed Between the Lines had my attention. But that’s a blog I’ve already written.

Spike Lee’s flicks have always been event-like to me and many of my generation. For 10 years starting in the late 80s, a Spike Lee Joint was the talk of the community. Sure he has had some misses like Girl 6, but for the most part, he exposed his audience to different aspects of the African-American experiences that a lot of us became interested in due to his introduction. Admittedly, the floating platform shots that have been his signature have been annoying at best, but you don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. Spike has always wanted to do things his way to put his signature on his work so that it would resonate for years to come.

What am I saying? Well, that Spike and Tyler are truly different filmmakers that make work that are equally as important in telling our story. Their work is a direct reflection of their backgrounds. Spike is a child of a Jazz music instructor and a teacher. He is a legacy Morehouse man, and not to mention he’s a New Yorker. While, Tyler Perry openly expresses his personal battles and experiences with molestation, homelessness and the gun-toting, Bible thumping, weed smoking, “Christian” relatives he put in a blender to come up with Madea.

Unfortunately film studios seem to believe that our market can only ingest one type of film per generation, while general market filmmakers can tell any story they like and get major distribution.

The easiest argument is the one that is often used in this case. Perry’s films make money, while Spike’s not as much. Let’s be clear. No one including Spike, can knock Tyler Perry’s hustle. No one does that better. But do you think that Lil’ Wayne is a better emcee than Nas or KRS-One because he sells more downloads? Do you believe that a Big Mac is better than a Ruth Chris sirloin because they sell more volume? The fact is that it is undeniable that Perry is a better business man then Spike, but not a better teacher.  Ultimately, when it’s all said and done, if I had to choose what to put in the time capsule for generations of the future to use as a case study of what our generations film making legacy would be, I’ve got to go with the little dude from Brooklyn. I guess that’s the professorial, Obama trait in me, overtaking the hustler, Diddy trait in me. I just think our future would be better off.
