This week on #LFCRadio we will be talking the current state of Black Radio.

A couple of weeks back, NYC experienced what many of us have experienced for years. The destruction of what many of us grew up knowing as black radio. Black Radio is now known in radio and more importantly, advertising circles as, “urban” and “contemporary hits radio.” It is no longer about local personalities like Donnie Simpson, The Boodah Brothers (RIP DJ Law), or DJ Red Alert. It is about finding that lucky jock that has the marketability and work ethic of a Tom Joyner to become the one voice that blacks go to for dialogue. But with that comes great responsibility. How do you entertain, but yet not be a buffoon? How do you inform but not come off boring? And then there is the music.

Well, as I was reading about NYC losing Kiss FM and thus losing Tom Joyner and Michael Baisden, it prompted me to write the blog Hey NY, You’re Losing Black Radio? We Know Your Pain! Than, I talked to the #LFCRadio team and decided its time to talk about it! Tonight we will have Cheryl Wilkerson on as our guest. Cheryl was a part of the long running Supreme Team Morning Show on WOWI-FM radio in Norfolk, VA. We are going to dig into the current state of black radio. Of course, to know where you are and where you are going, you have to know where you came from. We will dig into some of the history and evolution of the industry!

Tune in! Chime in! Tell a friend!

This week on #LFCRadio we will talk about the Consequences of Hazing. FAMU is in the midst of a tragedy for the family of Robert Champion, The Marching 100 Band and Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity. But beyond the issues that they are dealing with in Tallahassee, it has a ripple effect throughout the world of Black social organizations.

Hazing is one of the realities, whether completely real or slightly embellished, that is a big part of the history of black college life and beyond. Whether it be some of the obvious physical pledging techniques like “taking wood” and “branding”,  or some of the other techniques that may be unique and ritualistic to each individual organization, there are many forms of voluntary abuse that has been compared to injustices suffered by our ancestors during slavery. This in itself, is one of the reasons that many chose to bypass that part of their college experience or even pursue the organization as alumni.

Well after many years of hazing, it is becoming more and more emphasized as a ritual of black greek life that is “frowned” upon. Is it because there has been an epiphany realized by many in greek life that it was simply abuse, instead of a bonding experience? Is it because the legal repercussions have become to costly? The answer is probably “yes” to both.

We will dig into this subject with some members of the black greek community and the legal community. Our guests will include Leon Jones, Jr. ESQ. Leon, is a 20 year member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the legal counsel for the Middle Western Province and the Polemarch-Elect for the Fayetteville (AR) Alumni Chapter of the fraternity.

We will also have Rhonda Peoples-Waters (member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,) a practicing attorney in the Jacksonville, FL. area. We are looking for her to give us insight on the possible legal ramifications of the Champion case and others like it. Join us and tell your Divine Nine friends to tune in and chime in!

This week on Life Full Circle Radio, we will have Filmmaker DeShaun Davis of the 55TillNow Project. We will also have the young actor Jonah Lampkin, who will embody Emmett Till.

55TillNow will be the docudrama focused on the Emmett Till story. If you don’t know about Emmett Till, he was a 14-year-old young man from Chicago that visited his family in Mississippi only to be murdered for whistling at a white woman. See the full Wikipedia here. Davis’ goal is to use this story to actually create healing. Visit www.55tillnow.com for more details.

We will talk about the importance of this project with Davis, as well as get Lampkin’s take on how important it is for his generation to understand the impact of this story.

With the reality of tragedies like Trayvon Martin becoming more visible, there has been a lot of conversation about who Emmett Till is. The goal of this film, is to educate the viewing public on this very important story in American history. The conversation will start, right here on Life Full Circle Radio.

Join us and tell a friend to join the conversation!
